Composite Images in Architectural Drawing

Hi All,

Some inspiration/clarification below from:

Diller and Scofido
Morphosis
Students at Sciarch
Brodski and Utkin
Wellington Reiter (I recommend his book, Vessels and Fields)
Rendow Yee (His book shows the basics and has a section on composite images)

GrassENGINE4 version 3

Hi All,

Now up to version 3. Even more robust; although I recommend running it in "stand alone game" mode to play test it (that way it wont crash the UE4 editor if something does go wrong).

My fast machine slowed down when it had over 12,000 polys, but it didn't crash ... and with 6000 polys the update happened in a few seconds. Interested to hear how it goes on your system

Available on the courses drive under CODE1240.

GrassENGINE4 version 2.0

Hi All,

Version 2.0 of the GrassENGINE4 is available for download from the BE courses drive:

S:\Courses\CODE1240\Resources\UE4 PROJECT

Have another look at the readme ... you now need to press T every time you'd like to update the mesh.

This version is much more robust that the last, but I did find it was a little sensitive to setting up the port in the grasshopper script. With some perseverance you'll be fine. Once I had the port set in the grasshopper script matching with the port that UE4 is looking for I couldn't get it to crash unless I went over the poly limit; which is 8000.

I initially thought 8000 as a poly limit was a problem, but upon reflection I think its a reasonable "real world" number of components for a project this size. Interested to hear you comments below if you have an opinion on this.

Terminal Line Article

Hi All,

Finally the A+U journal with the Terminal Line article arrived from Japan.

I've scanned and uploaded it to the CODE1240 courses drive under resources/texts/TerminalLine_PrestonScottCohen.pdf

UPDATE: I've also uploaded it to the CODE1240 Moodle page under resources.

Please take a look, it will flesh out this concept more fully for you ... and aid you with Phase 02.

Terminal Line

Definition:

"A terminal Line is generated by a temporary loss of smoothness (continuity of slope and curvature) within a single surface. Such a line begins and ends on its own accord and defies the architectural definition of a line as a seam or boundary"

Preston Scott Cohen 1998

Refer to the quote above for the task for week 01, Phase 02:

Following the lecture introducing the "terminal line" consider potential terminal lines that intersect with the site; discuss these with your tutor.

Phase 01 Extension

Hi All,

A few students have contacted me regarding Phase 01 and requested an extension. The argument presented was that more time would ensure a higher quality result ... This is something I'm happy to support.

Because we have a packed schedule for Phase 01, and you all have work to complete for your other classes,I can only give an extension to this Tuesday by 23:59.

UPDATED: Course Outline

hi All,

It was brought to my attention that there was an error in the course outline regarding the submission date for the first Grasshopper exam run through the IDDA.

The date was correct in the Assessment breakdown but was incorrectly listed as week 3 in the assignment two description; this has now been corrected ... and an updated course outline uploaded to Moodle.

Very sorry for any stress caused by the error ... keep in mind that I'll remind you in class before any major due dates.

Site Model Template

Hi All,

I've uploaded a FBX of the 3ds Max site model template to Moodle for you to import into UE4; this will help with getting the scale and positions of all the buildings right on the site model.

To use this in UE4 you will need to import it and then scale it up 1000 times (in the x and y dimensions, the z can stay at 1)

Take a look at the import steps here:

https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Engine/Content/FBX/StaticMeshes/index.html#importmesh

Once you've followed those 4 simple steps you'll generate a static mesh, a material and a texture. You can then drag the static mesh into your level and scale it up as above.

The end result will be a very large sheet of A3 paper!
